Dr. Rob Lane - Author
I have been a medical oncologist for over 30 years. Now retired, I can spend time with cancer patients in our community helping them understand what their doctors have said, what their doctors left out and what it all means. Then I help them make decisions that respect their bodies, their families and the life they want to lead.

Early on I did research on how to control the side effects of cancer chemotherapy and later how to diagnose breast and prostate cancer in the least invasive way then to treat it in a boutique fashion tailored to each patient’s unique cancer and circumstances. For years I worked with national cooperative cancer groups: NSABP, SWOG, and P SOC doing clinical research on the characterization and treatment of different cancers.

I played a leadership role in conceiving, implementing and then directing a community cancer center, then the a hospice and then a multidisciplinary breast center. That center was dedicated to saving breasts and saving lives: both biologic patient lives and their experiential quality. This was achieved through the collaborative efforts of nurses, counselors and clergy and multiple specialty physicians - a practice unheard of then but more common today.
These responsibilities generated an opportunity to speak to patient groups, at conferences and on retreats where the focus has been on both creatively enduring the illness but also prospering and growing through it. I continue to learn from patients and to speak when offered the opportunity.
I presently live on an island in Puget Sound where I love taking care of the land and the beach when not sailing, climbing, or playing with one with my kids and sibs. I savor fireside reading with my wife and therapist, Suzanne (she is a Marriage and Family Therapist who practices on me regularly). Together we cherish our blended family of nine children and 22 grandchildren. We have started to run our own bell laps although the cancer bell hasn’t rung for either of us yet.
