Windrunners Blog

In this blog and the accompanying book Cancer's Windrunners, I want to share with you what I have learned from a group of amazing patients who journeyed with God through their cancers. They seemed to live lives of more purpose, meaning and joy — and often longer than I ever expected. Whatever was going on with them I wanted — and wanted to pass on to my other patients. HERE IT IS IN BLOG FORM.

For opportunities of a secular journey in a life with cancer, see the Bell Lap Blog.

BV5: WHERE DOES THE HOPE THAT PRODUCES VICTORY COME FROM?

Words of hope come from the history of God's provisions for the Hebrews but the REAL POWER OF HOPE comes from God's provisions for each of us personally. Words of promise on a page of scripture, and even historical evidence of God's provisions are not enough to fortify most people in the midst of cancer. Only personal experiential evidence (PEE) that God keeps His promises is enough for most people. At least that is what I learned from those who triumphed over cancer.

BV6: WHAT CAN WE HOPE FOR?

Psalm 121 tells us "God guards you from every evil, he guards your very life" . It is so easy to misinterpret that to mean he will guard our body and then conclude that scripture is  baloney cuz good people die.

Our life is what we do with our mind and soul which may or may not involve our body. The body is only a machine that works or doesn't. Our life is what we do with it and much more - how we respond to circumstances, challenges and opportunities, relational, environmental and spiritual.

BV8: SECOND STEP TO VICTORY

There is the second step to overcoming the uncertainty that can steal victory and which haunts all our lives especially when cancer is involved. The first step is to recognize the presence and power of that uncertainty and start praying about it.   Many feel that uncertainty is like a dragon voicing  both  our human frailties and deceptions of the devil. We are told that with prayer we can prevail over every such voice. In Phil 4:7, &       I Thes 5:17 Jesus invites us to bring everything to Him in prayer yet we seldom do it. And when we do, we often miss his answers.

BV9: THIRD STEP TOWARD VICTORY

Some answers to prayer come immediately resolving a question, or eliminating an uncertainty or abolishing a fear, but certainly not all. I used to give the Lord 5-30 minutes or maybe an hour of active listening to answer  a prayer. Then figuring I just wasn't going to get an answer or that the answer was "no" or was "figure it out yourself" I would go off and do it myself.I was never conscious that that was what I was doing or that I was limiting God in the process. I was just impatient, self centered and on the move.
