49 - MORE TECHNIQUES FOR FEAR MANAGEMENT

Naming the Dragon saps its power, like singling out an enemy and facing it head on – I see you, I know you, and I'm going to take you on. Fear doesn't like too much attention. When it is free to wander the back roads of your consciousness day and night it is the happiest and does the most harm. But identified, spoken, confronted, and shared, it shrinks in size and you can apply your weapons to it: reason, humor, distraction, and prayer.

SOME DEPRESSION IS NORMAL - TROUNCE IT

If you are normal you will get depressed and it will sap your vitality for a while, but you most likely will not stay that way. Bad news is depressing and only those who are either in denial or crazy don’t experience it. Many of us tread through life thinking of our bodies as something we can count on - or luxuriating in not thinking about them at all - just assuming: appetite will follow activity and the taste of food will not change; refreshment will follow on rest and strength will pretty much endure; biologic functions will be intact; no lumps, no pains, no panic.

12 - WHAT HAVOC CAN THE DRAGON REEK IN MY LIFE? THAT IS FOR KIDS - ISN'T IT?

Sue was out over 5 years from the surgery, radiation and chemotherapy for her cancer and  looking good when I asked "how are you doing? She smiled " I am doing fine".  Then with a sideways glance and not much more than a whisper she soberly confided " but the Dragon is always behind the door!"

When the chance of survival is uncertain and the prospect of a dramatic change in life is just too scary to consider, some simply refuse to read the writing on the wall. Instead, they hunker down and plow ahead, taking on more and more, moving ever faster and faster, burning themselves up and others out in an attempt to suck down every last drop of life. At such speed, wisdom cannot be found and her whispers are rarely heard – but the Dragon's voice always will be.

4 - WHAT’S WITH THE DRAGON?

Because there is always a Dragon behind the door and it will always be sniping at you, identifying it and keeping it at bay during treatment must receive your full attention

There are hosts of half comprehended, faulty Dragon inspired notions that float around the minds of the afflicted, often taking up residence unchallenged, only to haunt quiet times and steal joy. I want to flush out each one so as to cut it down to size and overcome it with truth. There is life after cancer. There is life with cancer. But you have to defeat the Dragon who would tell you otherwise to really experience both.
