The cancer treatment is over and much of the medical professionals disappear or move only into a surveillance mode. There is growing information to suggest that lifestyle, nutrition, exercise and attitude can affect gene expression and cell behavior of both healthy, not so healthy and malignant cells - upregulating or down regulating certain cellular behaviors by affecting their microenvironments through a mechanism called epigenetics. While special diets cannot cure cancer, they may have a role in keeping it at bay and preventing it from regrowing. It is worth consulting a naturopath or nutritionist interested in cancer to get some pointers on diet modifications . There is not enough data on all the details to warrant driving yourself crazy on a radical diet but you can help yourself by moving your diet in the right direction - more later.

The backstretch is about defining what is truly important in your life- even if you’re not planning to die soon, but particularly if you are. In horse racing, the backstretch is that part of the oval racetrack farthest from the spectators. It is the same for cancer patients. The entire crowd’s attention garnered by the initial diagnosis and treatment is dwindling. Even the dragon is slipping back in the shadows. The crowds that will line the home stretch are a long way off. This is a time just for you.
